Backs, by Magadalena Abakanowicz (What?) was constructed between 1976-80 with burlap and resin. The artist as had a fascination with the human form, specifically the back, which she clearly represents in her sculptures. Magagalena told the L.A. Times, " A face can lie, the back can not." She does not explain her art because she feels that would take away from it. She leaves her sculptures up to the interpretation of the viewer. This particular one has been interpreted to represent members of a cult, followers of a corrupt world leader, workers in an assembly line, and victims in a WWII concentration camp.
