"The Hailstorm" was done by Thomas Hart Benton in 1940. He used tempera on gesso panel to complete the piece. Thomas Hart Benton was an American painter and muralist, and he is strongly associated with Midwest. He was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement, and his paintings usually depicted everyday people in scenes of life in the United States. The hailstorm's of light and dark colors illustrate that the storm is not little. The tilt of the man and the horse provide an image of movement away from the storm.
