In 1914, Oskar Kokoscha completed "The Tempest (The Wind's Bride)." It was done using oil on canvas. Kokoscha was a Viennese Expressionist who's work reflected the increasing gap between public standards and the sincere artist's psychic reality. After encountering van Gogh's work, Kokoscha began a series of "black potraits," which seemed to unmask and bare the soul of his uneasy sitters. The Tempest was product of this time, and it nicely reflects German expressionism. The depiction of the couple is captivating. The way the lines move through and around them makes it clear that their relationship is the center of the piece.
