Lange Photo

     Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother is one of six photos the photographer took of a mother and her children during the Great Depression. Firstly, I appreciate the matriarchal position of the photo, situating the mother center, shielding, quite literally, her two featured children. The children's faces, furthermore, are tucked away, unseen, in an amalgamation of humility and shelter. What these faces cannot see, however, is the mother's unsettling disposition. She stands as a protector, but she clearly is unsure if she can even protect herself. She will work another day, however, and persevere, for it is the human condition, as this photo so strongly promotes, to fight not only for one's self, but perhaps even more so for one's children.
