A Smile without a Cat

I chose A Smile without a Cat by Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno.  It was done on December 4, 2002.  It was part of a fireworks display organized for Basel Miami Beach Art Fair.  I think that it is really interesting that this piece of art is made out of fireworks.  It is something I have never seen before.  It is impressive that the face has so much detail in it.

The Basket of Apples

I love how he places the apples so frivolously almost like they weren't placed at all. It reminds me of Parisian kitchen, with the wood surface and cookies placed on a simple white plate. The slanted wine bottle is off center which I found interesting. I just think it looks so vibrant and makes you want to be in Paris on a crisp spring morning while enjoying the view outside a terrace! Ideal living if you ask me!

Picasso

This painting is called "Guernica" and it's by Pablo Picasso. It's an oil on canvas and is a response to the bombing of Guernica, Spain. It was done in 1937 and is considered an iconic painting for peace. I was drawn to this painting because of the complexity that goes on in it. You see people animals and other figures all seeming distressed and eerie. Even before I read about the painting's meaning I really liked that it was in black and white. I liked the fact that it was a B&W even more after realizing what it exemplifies because it does show the black and white of war without needing any words.

Iroquois Landscape- Andre Masson

I found this piece of artwork, Iroquois Landscape in Chapter 12 titled "Surrealism: The Resolution of Dream and Reality".  I stopped upon this page because of the deep color with spurts of fluroscent color. The artist of the work is Andre Masson.  He developed automatism which was an abstract calligraphy rhyth of lines and strokes.  He tended to add violence and drama into his work.  Iroquosis was created in 1943, oil on canvas. Many pieces of his artwork reflected aniamal violence, passion, destiny, and symbolic unity of all things.

Three Musicians

Three Musicians in an oil on canvas painting completed by Pablo Picasso in 1921. I chose this piece because I read that the 3 men pictured are himself and 2 of his friends and I find that interesting. Three Musicians is a large painting measuring more than 2 meters wide and high. It is painted in the style of Synthetic Cubism and gives the appearance of cut paper.

  This is a landscape on a oil on a canvas.  I chose this because I like Monet.  The colors and I thought how you can see the brush strokes was really cool.

Tropical Sun by Emil Nolde

This painting is titled Tropical Sun by Emil Nolde.  It was painted in 1914 and is an oil on canvas.  I like this painting because I really liked the sharp contrast of the colors.  Each of the colors is met by a contrasting color no matter where you look in the painting.  I liked the landscape of this painting, and felt as though it had a serene and calming feeling to it.
