Apples and Oranges

I like this painting, Apples and Oranges, by Cezanne because I really liked the way he painted the sky.  The left and right corners of the sky look dooming, almost cracked, but the landscape and greenery insinuate light and happiness.  Where as the sky is looming, the land is peaceful.

Homage to the Square

This Oil on Board (1961) painting done by Josef Albers is one of a series named Homage to the Square. His series began in 1949, and he is most remembered for these works. Each of the paintings in the series is the same generic format, with three or four squares, each a different color. Personally, I think dedicating nearly 10 years of one's career to the same figure but different colors is a bit elementary. This painting does nothing for me.

I really love so many things about this painting. The brush strokes add so much depth to the painting, it even adds detail..making the trees leaves look more real. Between that and the swirl of the sky, and the lack of details in the faces, the painting gives a very soft feeling. It's almost like looking through a blurry lens, you want to see more of it, more detail.

Monk by the Sea

I chose this painting because I liked how simple it is. Even though it is simple, it is still very interesting. The viewer can interpret it any way they like, it does not seem to have one particular meaning. 

Air, Fire

I chose the painting Air, Fire by Auguste Herbin.  The painting was completed in 1944.  The medium is oil on canvas.  The painting is 5’ by 7’8”.  The painting can be found at the Musee National  d’Arte Moderne in Paris.  I like the way all of the bright colors contrast in this painting.  The colors are more vivid in the actual painting than in the picture.  The colors of fire are portrayed really well in the painting.  I also like that it is made out of basic geometric shapes.

Sorrows of the king

Sorrows of the King was painted by Henir Matisse in 1952. It is gouache on cut and pasted paper. I really enjoyed the use of colors in this. They are very bright and vibrant. I took me a good 5 mins to see what was actually going on in this painting. As I was flipping through this book it really stood out me. With all the bright colors and because it was Matisse.

Monk by the Sea

This is the Monk by the Sea by Caspar David Friedrich done during 1809-1810 it is an Oil on Canvas. I liked this painting because it shows a lot of darkness at the bottom however the top is very light.  I like how this painting portrays the sea in a very menacing way, a lot of artists like to show the beauty of the sea in a peaceful way with the sun setting or something like that but this painting shows the darker side of the ocean.
